Commercial drivers

For drivers whose license is the job

A charge that costs most drivers a fine can cost a commercial driver a disqualification and a paycheck. We treat a CDL case that way from the first call.

Commercial drivers are held to stricter rules, in a truck and often in their own car too. A single serious ticket can count against a CDL, and federal rules limit how a commercial driver's ticket can be reduced.

We handle tickets and charges from any county along the routes our clients drive, including out-of-state citations, so you can keep the route you have. We'll also tell you what, if anything, to say to your employer.

What we handle

  • DUI in a commercial or personal vehicle

  • Speeding and serious traffic violations

  • Out-of-state tickets

  • Logbook and hours-of-service citations

  • Overweight and equipment tickets

  • Disqualification and reinstatement

Why it's different

What changes when you hold a CDL

  • Lower limits

Commercial drivers are held to a lower alcohol limit behind the wheel of a truck than other drivers.

  • Tickets add up

Two or three serious tickets in a few years can disqualify a CDL, even when each one seemed small.

  • Fewer ways to reduce a ticket

Federal rules bar some of the usual deals for a commercial driver, so a plan has to start early.

  • Your own car counts

A DUI in your own pickup on a Saturday can still cost you the CDL on Monday.

  • Out-of-state courts

A ticket in another state still follows you home. Often we can handle it without you driving back.

  • Your employer

We'll tell you what you have to report, by when, and what you don't.

CDL questions

Questions commercial drivers ask

Will my company find out?

Often, yes: many convictions have to be reported, and your record is checked. We'll go over what you're required to tell them and when.

I got a ticket out of state. Do I have to go back?

Not always. We may be able to work with a local lawyer there or handle it in writing. Call us with the citation in hand.

Can't you just get it reduced to a non-moving violation?

For CDL holders, federal rules usually don't allow that kind of reduction. There are other options, and we'll go through them.
